Biobanking Services
Store your samples in complete security using Sampled’s biobanking services. At Sampled we take every precaution to ensure your samples are secure and ready for use at a moment’s notice.
What are Biobanking Services?
Biobanking Services involve the receiving, accessioning, cataloging, appropriate handling, storage, and retrieval of biological samples.
Biobanking allows for the short-term storage of active samples and long-term storage of samples for archival purposes at a variety of temperatures from room temperature, -80°C to −196°C Cryogenic. Biobanking is typically used for a wide range of purposes including clinical and longitudinal studies. Sampled specializes in high-touch “active” samples, we optimize the biomaterial processing strategy to ensure the sample is immortalized for active studies and future use. We ensure samples are available on-demand, maximizing utilization while preserving samples for future use as per ISBER Best Practices. Biobanking also involves the physical storage of the biosample at the appropriate temperature, providing an unbroken chain of custody for the sample and its conditions and ensuring secure storage of data and metadata associated with the stored samples.
Sampled is the world’s only global integrated analytical biorepository and our biobanking sample storage service is essential for streamlining our logistics services to our multiomic and cellular analytical pipelines.
At Sampled, our robust security and storage capacities mean you can trust us with your most precious biosamples. Our vast repertoire of experience and analytical services means that we are prepared to store and process your sample for virtually any downstream analysis, from single-cell sequencing to proteomics. Our expansive and diverse storage facilities mean we can process and store practically any biological sample.
Why Use Sampled’s Biobanking Services?
Large-Scale High-Quality Instrumentation
Here at Sampled, we use only the highest quality instruments to ensure your samples are properly processed. Our abundance of high-end equipment means we can immediately process or store your sample. No resource is lacking – if something needs to be processed right away it doesn’t sit in a freezer potentially deteriorating until resources are available. Everything we receive is stored in the conditions requested by the client. We have over 600 mechanical -80 °C freezers, with a capacity for over 1,000 freezers, making us one of the largest biobanks in the US. We have a huge capacity for biosample processing and routinely process large sample cohorts for state and private projects. By using both fully automated and manual methods we combine a high capacity for processing with the specificity required by our clients.
Robust Security
At Sampled we keep sample security as a priority. Your biosample is stored safely and is readily available whenever you need it. We put measures in place to ensure your samples are as safe as possible. For example, our entire biorepository can be run off one generator and we have four backup generators. Each freezer has its own independent temperature monitor so if something goes wrong our team knows exactly where to look. Our liquid nitrogen tanks are all maintained by an autofill system and only staff with appropriate access can gain access to the storage space and individual freezers. At Sampled, we will never sell your data or samples to a third party. Everything we store is owned entirely by the client. Through our LIMS system, a full chain of custody is documented to ensure we and our clients know exactly what has been done to each sample.
Trusted
Sampled is trusted to store the samples and data of large government and clinical trial cohorts. Our clients trust us with longitudinal studies that track developmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases: we are trusted to safely store samples across lifetimes and generations. We also have a wealth of disaster recovery procedures in place to ensure samples are protected, from onsite technical services to back-up redundancies..
Specialized in High-Touch Samples
Sampled’s biobanking system is a great option for active studies in addition to long-term storage and sample management. We have many options for analytical studies and have specialized expertise in sample aliquoting and distribution to collaborators, CROs, or third-party organizations at the client’s request.
Biobanking Services Applications

How Do Biobanking Services Work?
Receipt of Sample
When the package arrives we perform a physical inspection of the packaging to check it for any damage. We then open the package and remove the documentation and samples, ensuring they are handled in the appropriate client-defined environment. A visual check on the sample is performed to determine any damage, leakage, turbidity, hemolyzation, and to ascertain that the sample matches the electronic dataset. If there are discrepancies the client will be contacted immediately to resolve them.
Accessioning
The sample is scanned and the barcodes are entered into the LIMS system. Any data on the attached documents i.e. date, subject ID, study number, or any other associated data is also recorded. Physical documents are scanned and retained. An image of the sample is taken and stored which records additional barcoding and any handwritten information. Additional QC checks are performed such as measuring the volume against a reference tube.
Further Processing
From here the sample can either be stored, distributed to a third party, or sent directly to our lab for processing. Generally, the first job in the lab is to fractionate and aliquot the sample for immediate use and long-term storage. By using the right biomaterial processing strategy, we can effectively immortalize the sample, ensuring there is enough sample for future studies.
